Hourly Matched Renewable Energy: Why 24/7 Carbon-Free Claims Are Replacing Annual RECs

Annual renewable energy matching lets a company run on coal at midnight and call itself 100% renewable. Hourly matching (24/7 CFE) closes that gap — and it requires granular, verifiable generation data that only instrumented microgrids can produce.

The accounting trick inside “100% renewable”

Under annual matching, a company buys renewable energy certificates (RECs) equal to its yearly consumption and claims to be 100% renewable — even though the solar that backs those certificates was generated at noon in one grid while the company consumed coal power at midnight in another. The electrons and the claims never meet.

Hourly matched renewable energy — also called 24/7 carbon-free energy (CFE) — requires that every hour of consumption be matched with carbon-free generation in the same hour, on the same grid. Google, Microsoft, and a growing list of governments have committed to it, granular certificate standards (EnergyTag) now exist to trade it, and disclosure regimes are moving from "how much?" to "when and where?"

Hourly matching is a data problem before it is an energy problem

You cannot match what you cannot measure. Annual matching needs one number per year; hourly matching needs 8,760 verified pairs of consumption and generation — and the verification is the hard part. Self-reported hourly data inherits every weakness of self-reported annual data, just 8,760 times over.

This is where instrumented, sovereign microgrids have a structural advantage: the edge gateway already meters generation and consumption at second-to-minute resolution, and anchoring each interval to a public blockchain makes the hourly record tamper-evident by construction. An auditor — or a granular-certificate registry — can verify your 3 AM consumption was matched by your batteries discharging stored solar, without trusting your spreadsheet.

Geography sets the difficulty. Matching daytime hours is easy in Dubai or Phoenix; the expensive hours are winter evenings, and grids differ enormously in how dirty those hours are — from hydro-rich Norway to coal-heavy Poland. Our location pages publish grid carbon intensity for both, which is the number your unmatched hours get scored against.

How to get to a defensible hourly claim

Step 1: instrument. Meter consumption and any on-site generation at interval resolution with a tamper-evident log. Step 2: compute your baseline CFE score — the share of hours already matched. Most companies discover they are 40–70% hourly-matched despite being "100% renewable" annually; the honest number is the starting point. Step 3: attack the gap hours with storage dispatch, load shifting into high-CFE hours, and — where markets allow — granular certificates for the remainder. AI dispatch matters here because shifting load into clean hours and shaving demand charges are the same optimization with different objective weights.

The Sovereign Pilot delivers steps 1 and 2 in 60–90 days: interval metering, an on-chain audit trail, and a verified hourly CFE baseline you can publish without an asterisk.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between annual matching and hourly matching?

Annual matching balances total yearly consumption against renewable certificates regardless of timing or location. Hourly matching (24/7 CFE) requires carbon-free generation in the same hour and grid as each hour of consumption — a far stricter and more physically honest claim.

What CFE score do most companies start with?

Companies that are '100% renewable' on an annual basis typically measure 40–70% hourly-matched once they instrument, because nights and winter evenings are unmatched. Storage dispatch and load shifting are the main levers for closing the gap.

Why does hourly matching need blockchain anchoring?

An hourly claim is 8,760 individual assertions per year. Anchoring each interval's digest on-chain makes the record tamper-evident, so auditors and granular-certificate registries can verify the claim without trusting the reporter.
